Biden-Xi to Speak

President Joe Biden will speak with Chinese leader Xi Jinping on Thursday amid fresh tensions over Taiwan. The first conversation between the two presidents since March will take place at a particularly difficult juncture for US-China ties: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s staff and security officials aren’t ruling out plans for her to visit Taiwan in early August. China considers the self-governing island part of its territory. The US Ambassador to China said in June that relations with China have deteriorated to probably “the lowest moment” since diplomatic relations resumed in 1972. Biden also is considering whether to lift some tariffs on Chinese imports in a bid to stem rampant inflation.

조 바이든 미국 대통령이 11일 대만을 둘러싼 긴장 속에 시진핑 중국 국가주석과 회담할 예정이다. 3월 이후 두 대통령 간의 첫 대화는 미중 관계에 있어 특히 어려운 시기에 열릴 것입니다. 낸시 펠로시 하원 의장의 참모와 보안 관리들은 8월 초 그녀가 대만을 방문할 계획을 배제하지 않고 있습니다. 중국은 자치도를 영토의 일부로 간주합니다. 중국 주재 미국 대사는 지난 6월 중국과의 관계가 1972년 외교 재개 이후 "가장 낮은 순간"으로 악화됐다고 말했다. 바이든 전 부통령은 만연한 인플레이션을 막기 위해 중국산 수입품에 대한 일부 관세를 해제할지 여부도 고려하고 있다.

Dual Listings

Alibaba’s move to switch its primary listing to Hong Kong could provide a template for the roughly 200 US-traded Chinese companies that face delisting should Washington and Beijing fail to agree on allowing US regulators to review their financial audits. JD.com and Baidu are among firms that may follow in applying for a Hong Kong primary listing, as they seek to attract mainland investors and hedge against the risk of being kicked off US exchanges. Over the past year, Chinese companies have increasingly opted for a dual-primary listing in both the US and Hong Kong to elevate their status and allow their stocks to be included into the city’s trading links with Shenzhen and Shanghai bourses.
